Cosmetic Dentistry

At Wahlers Family Dentistry, we offer many cosmetic dentistry options, including Invisalign, teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, bridges and implants. Cosmetic Dentistry is technically not an official specialty of dentistry. Many dentists choose to advertise that they are “Cosmetic Dentists” when in fact there is no official designation of a cosmetic dentist—in other words, those dentists are simply giving themselves that title for advertising purposes. Although we do not label our practice as a cosmetic dental office, Dr. Wahlers routinely uses veneers, crowns, Invisalign and implants to cosmetically improve the smiles of our patients, and has received extensive training in these procedures.

Good dentistry should begin with maintaining and restoring health, and in this day and age, it is possible to perform great long-lasting dentistry that also looks amazing! Years ago, gold and silver were used extensively in people’s mouths. These materials are strong, but very unaesthetic. We offer modern materials, including all-porcelain crowns and veneers, white composite fillings and offer metal free dental prosthetics. Dr. Wahlers has not placed silver-mercury fillings for many years. We offer all of the cosmetic options that any modern, up-to-date dental office should offer.

Modern composite resins are white, “tooth-colored” filling material that when placed correctly can blend seamlessly with almost any tooth shade. Modern porcelains which are used to make veneers, crowns and bridges, are so esthetic that it is often difficult, even for a dentist, to distinguish them from natural teeth. A “cosmetic” dentist is also only as good as the equipment and dental labs that they use to fabricate their veneers and crowns. We use only the best products and highly respected technicians, all located within the United States, to fabricate our dental restorations.

If you have any questions about what options are available to you to improve your smile, never hesitate to schedule a consultation appointment. Dr. Christopher Wahlers is always willing to share his opinion and let you know your options, to help you to decide what is best for your smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the edges of front teeth are only mildly chipped or worn, many times some simple polishing and smoothing will greatly improve esthetics.  Other times, white composite fillings may be placed to restore tooth structure that may have worn or chipped away.  If the wear is more significant, veneers or crowns may be a better option to provide optimal esthetics and strength.  If there is a long history of chipping or wear, it could be a sign of a grinding habit called bruxism, and a custom nightguard (clear mouthpiece worn at night) may help prevent future problems.  Always feel free to ask us about ways to improve the esthetics of your teeth!

We offer all modern cosmetic options in our office, including professional whitening, veneers, crowns, implants, white (tooth-colored) fillings, bonding and esthetic tooth replacement options (porcelain bridges).  We also offer Invisalign which is a clear, esthetic alternative to braces.  In some cases, we will involve a periodontist or orthodontist to assist in positioning the teeth or gums to ensure a more predictable esthetic outcome.  If you have any questions about the services we offer, feel free to call for a consultation to discuss your options.

What additional training is required for a dentist to become a cosmetic dentist?

This is actually a trick question, because the answer is none!  This is because Cosmetic Dentistry is not a recognized specialty by the ADA or by any Dental Board in the US.  It is essentially the same as if a dentist said they were a Friendly Dentist, or a Family Dentist or a Gentle Dentist; it is only a description that some dentists use to advertise.  All dentists are able to perform the same procedures and techniques on their patients, including whitening, implants, veneers, crowns, gingival grafting or gingivectomy (reshaping).

Some dentists do have a particular love for performing complex cosmetic work, and there are certainly differences in the ...
